Take Five to stop fraud

In 2024, criminals stole £1.17 billion through scams and fraud.

You can help protect yourself by remembering three simple steps:

Take a moment before you share your money or personal details. Scammers often try to rush you.

Ask yourself: Could this be fake?
It’s okay to say no, hang up, or ignore a message.
Real companies won’t pressure you or make you panic.

If you think you’ve been scammed:

  1. Contact your bank straight away
  2. Report it to Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or at www.reportfraud.police.uk

  • Never share your PIN or full banking password
  • Don’t trust a message just because it looks official
  • Don’t let anyone rush you into a decision
  • Trust your gut – if something feels wrong, it probably is
  • Stay in control – take your time and think things through

Even if someone says they’re from your bank, the police, or another trusted group – stop and think. Real organisations won’t mind if you take a moment to check.

If you’re ever unsure, speak to your bank or a trusted friend before doing anything.
